Finasteride is the generic name for the brand name drugs Proscar and Propecia. In 1997 it was approved for treatment of hair loss in the crown for men. What consumers don’t know is that the claim for treatment only in the crown is because the FDA trials only studied hair growth in the crown. This limited the claims that Merck could make regarding effectiveness, even though many patients showed hair thickening and regrowth in the hairline.
